Zurich Airport in Switzerland won the World Travel Award as the best airport in Europe for the 18th year in a row.
The World Travel Awards are the most prestigious award programs in the travel industry, while being presented to the best service providers in many areas of the travel and tourism industry, TheSchengen.com reports.
In this category, Zurich Airport has been undefeated since 2004, as reported by Aviation Authority 24. According to the Zurich Airport authorities, this award reflects the quality standards as well as the services provided by this airport.
In addition, according to the CEO of Flughafen Zürich AG, Stefan Wiedrig, this is a consequence of all the companies present at the airport.
“In these difficult times, in particular, the award is a great honor for us. It is a recognition of the excellent cooperation between all our airport partners and the tremendous commitment of all those working at Zurich Airport,” Wedrig noted in this regard.
However, Zurich Airport, the largest airport in the Swiss territory, was also affected by the spread of the Corona virus. However, the airport has recently seen an increase in the number of passengers.
In September, a total of 1,383,209 passengers passed through this airport, which is a 157.9 percent increase over the figures for the same period one year ago. Additionally, compared to September 2019 figures, passenger numbers registered an increase of 47.9 percent.
Passenger traffic at Zurich Airport remained high in September, even after the peak tourist season.
The number of passengers at this airport during the past month was 1,030,411. At the same time, the number of passengers carried increased to 25.0 percent, or 344,142 passengers.
In addition, air traffic recorded an increase of 67.3 percent compared to 2019 figures, while air traffic recorded a 34.1 percent decrease compared to 2019 figures.
Air traffic is also expected to increase during the fall holiday weeks. During this period the airport operator expects approximately 70,000 passengers.
Besides Zurich airport, the Brazilian airports Florianópolis and Vitoria also took first place.
