Spain’s Air Traffic to Surpass Pre-pandemic Figures During Winter Period

The Spanish Airlines Association (ALA) has revealed that the country expects to increase the number of flights during the winter months, exceeding the numbers recorded during the pre-pandemic period in 2019.

According to Reuters, the president of the ALA, Javier Gandara, said that about 1.9 percent of domestic and international flights are scheduled to increase in the winter period, from November through March compared to 2019.

In addition, it was noted that planned flights to the Canary Islands and the Balearic Islands are currently 10 percent higher than they were two years ago.

Thus, if the numbers continue in this positive trend and if more people choose Spain as their holiday destination, the country’s air traffic will soon be able to reach the level recorded in 2019, TheSchengen.com reports.

Last month, the Spanish government announced that more than five million international travelers would arrive in the country during August 2021, an increase of 172 percent compared to the same month in 2020.

Spain saw an increase in international travelers from all major source countries, with the UK being the leading market for the first time during 2021. In August, 821,853 Britons arrived in Spain, meaning the number of passengers tripled compared to last year.

With the exception of the United Kingdom, the second source country was Germany, with over 803,000 passengers, and its main destination was the Balearic Islands.

Regarding the September figures, according to the latest data provided by the Spanish Institute of Statistics (INE), accommodation in hotel establishments in Spain has increased by 212.1% compared to the same month in 2020.

“During the month of September, overnight stays in hotel establishments exceeded 25.6 million, an increase of 212.1 percent over the same month of 2020,” the statement from the National Institute of Statistics said.

Similar to the other months, the Balearic Islands, the Canary Islands, and the Andalusia region were the main destinations for international travelers.

In September, 52.2% of available places were covered, an annual increase of 96.3%. The weekend household occupancy rate increased by 77.4 per cent and reached 60.6 per cent.

Earlier, the International Air Transport Association (IATA) warned that the cost increase announced by airports and air navigation service providers would delay the restoration of air travel and harm connectivity and international customers.
