Poland Urges UK Nationals in the Country to Apply for Residence Permits

The Polish Foreign Affairs Office has warned British nationals living in Poland that they have plenty of time until December 31, 2021 to apply for residence permits in order to continue to reside legally in the country.

Furthermore, the authority is inviting UK citizens and their family members to take advantage of the residence permit exchange program by applying for their residence permit, as the application procedure is simplified due to the Withdrawal Agreement, reports.

Until the end of this year, beneficiaries of the Withdrawal Agreement may submit requests to exchange these documents to county offices. The procedures in these cases are simplified. Therefore, the Aliens Office recommends submitting applications as soon as possible.”

UK nationals who do not yet have a residence permit will have to register their residence. In contrast, family members of British citizens who do not have British citizenship are required to apply for a residence card. To date, 3,700 applications for a residence permit have been submitted through the Simplified Application Program. Applicants who submit their applications by December 31, 2021 will receive an application certificate valid for 12 months, serving as a temporary residence permit.

An application for a new residence permit, residence registration or issuance of a residence card must be submitted in person to the Polish office in charge of the place of residence. Forms intended for beneficiaries of the instance agreement exist, and the actions in these cases are free of charge.

The permit system is used to issue the above-mentioned documents. Although UK citizens do not need to obtain it to continue staying in Poland. However, the Office of Aliens Affairs recommends that all beneficiaries of the Withdrawal Agreement obtain new residence permits. This document will facilitate the use of their rights when crossing the border and during their stay in Polish territory.

Moreover, holders of permits issued before the end of 2020 who did not apply for a residence permit until December 31, 2021, will have to apply for a permit, but the application will not be as simplified as in the Withdrawal Agreement.

The United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union, also known as Brexit, was completed on the basis of the Withdrawal Agreement, which includes mobility, provisions regulating the principles of British citizens and their family members residing in Poland. Since January 1, 2021, this category has the right of residence, according to the current conditions, if their stay in the country complies with the laws of the European Union before the end of 2020.
