Madeira Receives World Travel Award for Europe’s Best Island Destination

For the eighth year in a row, Madeira received the World Travel Award as Europe’s Best Island Destination.

In the World Travel Award, 11 other archipelagos/islands were voted on, TheSchengen.com reports.

The Regional Secretary for Tourism and Culture of Madeira, Eduardo Jesus, considered the award a remarkable achievement.

In this regard, the Regional Secretary noted that “the number of times Madeira has won this award contributes to giving more consistency to the recognition that the region has achieved globally in recent years.”

According to him, the award should fill all the people who work in tourism in the region with pride, the residents who see their land being praised internationally as well as the thousands of travelers who value their holiday destination more.

“We also have reasons to be happy with how the destination is reacting to the pandemic,” Eduardo Jesus emphasized.

Despite being considered the best destination in Europe, the travel and tourism industry in Madeira has been hit hard by the coronavirus outbreak.

However, the government recently stressed that it will help the travel and tourism sector out of the crises triggered by the virus. According to the government, the salary increase will occur above all in the tourism and trade sectors, adding that “the recovery of the economy should be felt by everyone.”

The Azores were also in the nominations for the World Travel Awards for Best Destination in Europe, along with other islands in other regions, according to the Herald News.

Established in 1993, the World Travel Awards are the most prestigious award programs in the travel and tourism sectors, as well as the hospitality industries.

TheSchengen.com reported that at the 28th World Travel Awards, Zurich Airport in Switzerland was named the best airport in Europe for the 18th consecutive year.

In this regard, the CEO of Flughafen Zürich AG, Stefan Wiedrig, confirmed that this is a result of companies that have been placed at this airport.

“In these difficult times, in particular, the award is a great honor for us. It is a recognition of the excellent cooperation between all our airport partners and the tremendous commitment of all those working at Zurich Airport.

Besides Zurich Airport in Switzerland, other airports such as Florianopolis and Vitoria are also ranked in the top positions.

Furthermore, the World Travel Awards also considered THE LOFT at Brussels Airport as ‘Europe’s Leading Airline Lounge 2021’.
