Greek Ministry of Tourism: Bookings Marked 30% Increase in January 2022 Compared to 2019

For Greek tourism, 2019 was a historic year. However, 2022 is expected to surpass previous epidemic figures.

In a press release issued by the Greek Tourism Ministry on February 15, it was announced that in January 2022, package bookings for Greece grew by 30 percent compared to 2019.

Moreover, the country expects that in 2022 airline seats available to leading travel agencies from the UK will increase by 37 per cent in Crete, 24 per cent in Rhodes and 20 per cent in Kos, compared to 2019 figures.

Tourism Minister Vassilis Kikilias has indicated that TUI alone, a British leisure travel group, will bring in three million visitors this year instead of 1.5 million.

DER Touristik, Germany’s second tourist operator, announced a 20 percent increase, to 1.2 million visitors, while requesting special agreements for October, November and December 2022, which means that our strategy to expand the tourist product is realistic, noting in this regard.

Minister Kikilias also said that he was visited on February 14 by the ambassador of the United States of America, Jeffrey Byat, with whom they announced that as of April, Greece will have 14 direct flights for American companies, and the first one will start on March 7. .

Moreover, the Minister of Tourism noted that for two and a half years, only the government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis has reduced taxes.

“In the 4.5 years before the Tsipra-Kameno government, dozens of taxes were raised in the name of economic unification, in the name of solidarity, in the name of pressure on institutions that were renamed and no longer triplets. It was huge and painful.”

He also expressed his satisfaction to show that the country is currently developing as a result of investing in hotels in the affected areas, which means that this investment will bring travelers and financial income and will increase employment opportunities.

According to the Greek Tourism Ministry’s announcement, investments in tourism and infrastructure enable the average Greek family to progress and prosper.

Thousands of Greek citizens work in the field of tourism whether it is trade, shops or even transportation, but there is concern among business owners and tourism workers due to the energy crisis and high prices. The government has assured these companies and workers that it is taking action to resolve these issues.

Tourism Minister Vassilis Kikilias called on regions, municipalities, the private sector, hotels, travel agencies, health stores and the world of commerce to prepare for the spring season, adding that tourism in Greece is a national goal.
