Arrival Rates at Greek Airports Surpass Pre-Pandemic Levels in May, Authorities Reveal

The Greek Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport revealed that 5.9 million passengers traveled through Greek airports in May alone, showing a 370.7 percent increase compared to 2021 and a 3.4 percent increase in aircraft traffic compared to 2019 levels.

According to a press release issued by the authority, 48,498 flights were operated in May of 2019, in addition to 5.8 million incoming and outgoing flights, an increase of 1% in May 2022, indicating a recovery in air traffic after two years. A prolonged pandemic and travel restrictions, reports.

With regard to the arrival of passengers on foreign flights, in 2019, the number reached 2.3 million, while in the same period in 2022, an increase of 3.2 percent was observed.

Moreover, 14 million passengers had arrived at Greek airports by May, with the total number of arrivals increasing by 377.7 percent compared to the same month in 2021, when 2.9 million passengers were hosted.

In addition, the country’s airports saw 139,861 flights, including 68,352 domestic flights and 71,509 international flights, making the number of flights conducted 115.8% higher than in 2021, when 64,823 flights were recorded.

According to 2019 levels, when no pandemic or travel restrictions were imposed, the number of trips made fell only 5.3 percent this year, when 147,622 flights were operated. Moreover, the number of passengers registered in May 2022 is quite close to 2019 levels as it lags behind those rates by only 14 percent or about 2.2 million passengers.

The total number of passengers handled reached 5,927,281 passengers, registering an increase of 370.7% compared to the same period of 2021 when 1,259,340 passengers were handled. Flights to all the country’s airports amounted to 50,171 flights, including 18,293 domestic and 31,878 international, an increase of 143.1 percent compared to the same period in May 2021, when 20,638 flights were operated.

Moreover, for inbound passenger flights in May 2022, an increase of 530 percent, equivalent to 2,433,492 passengers, was recorded, compared to the same month of 2021 when the number of outbound arrivals amounted to 386,243 passengers.

The Bank of Greece revealed that the number of international travelers registered in Greece throughout the month of April increased by 884 percent compared to the previous year, indicating the strong summer season awaiting the Mediterranean country.

“There is no doubt that the numbers and the data are very good so far. But with that, I tell everyone that we will make funding at the end of the year and after the tourist season is over,” said the Minister of Tourism, Vassilis Kikilias.
